US security risk: New York officials carry out mock attack on subways in terror test | World | News

The MTA and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will carry out an eerie drill simulating a terrorist attack in New York City over the subsequent two weeks. US security officials insist there’s “no imminent threat” of an attack on New York City. A TV anchor for Fox 5 New York stated: “As scary as it sounds, it is for your safety. Don’t be alarmed.”

The exams, which can end on October 29, are supposed to test chemical and organic attack readiness.

Fox’s Reagan Medgie defined: “Researchers will be pumping that non-toxic gas throughout the subway system to imitate a biological and chemical attack

While the announcement sparked concern, former New York State Homeland Security Advisor Michael Balboni insisted there was nothing to be worried about.

He said: “This is to not sign to individuals there’s an imminent risk.”

Mr Balboni continued: “The key right here is should you consider your adversaries need to take down the core central transit system, then how would they do this?

“This would be one of those ways.

“This is only a proactive stance by MTA to make sure individuals are snug that airflow has been examined.”

The ‘airflow and dispersion study’ is designed to simulate “the aerosol launch of a organic agent in a densely populated city atmosphere”.

Mr Balboni explained that the non-toxic gases will then be tracked, allowing researchers to understand the relationship between airflow on street level and in underground environments.

Researchers will take air samples and materials that settle on the ground and other surfaces.

HS Senior Official Kathryn Coulter Mitchell said: “The aim of those exams is to ship actionable info to emergency preparedness planning authorities for potential wide-area launch of harmful chemical substances or organic supplies.

“Lessons realized now will assist refine and confirm airflow and dispersion fashions that can inform response protocols and preserve our residents, crucial infrastructure together with hospitals, police and hearth stations, and our transit techniques secure.”
