Champions League: Shame on BT Sport for leaving viewers in the dark over chaos

KIERAN GILL: Shame on BT Sport for leaving viewers utterly in the dark over the Champions League closing chaos… the rights-holders failed miserably to inform us what was taking place, whereas the BBC did it justice

  • BT Sport failed to tell viewers about the scenes outdoors the Stade de France
  • Jake Humphrey did his greatest to waffle, however rights-holders’ protection was unhelpful
  • Pundits talked of ‘stories’ of bother however no footage of the chaos was broadcast
  • The BBC, on the different hand, did this vital, creating story some justice

On BBC Radio 5 Live, we heard from Nick Parrott, a Liverpool fan who described being ‘pepper-sprayed’ for the first time in his life and the way there was ‘crushing’ being brought on by the French police.

It was an vital, creating story and the Beeb did it justice.

On BT Sport, in the meantime, we heard from presenter Jake Humphrey, who did his greatest to waffle whereas the Champions League’s tv rights-holders failed miserably to inform us exactly what was taking place outdoors of the Stade de France.

In between gags about pre-match performer Camila Cabello, Humphrey and his panel of pundits talked of ‘stories’ of bother. But we noticed nothing. No footage of the followers being tear-gassed. No photos of the hundreds nonetheless outdoors.

It felt weird that BT did not have at the least one reporter offering updates from outdoors, or a single digital camera capturing the scenes, with Michael Owen as an alternative telling us ‘we do not know what’s gone on’ and ‘we’re speculating’.

Strange, uninformative, unhelpful, and a thumbs down from this review.

Supporters were pepper-sprayed and bottlenecked, but the broadcaster was uninformative
