Marks and Spencer celebrated its finest ever Christmas as it grew to become the UK’s quickest rising grocer and bras flew off the cabinets.

Food gross sales within the three months to January 1 had been 10 per cent larger than a year earlier – leaving rivals together with Tesco and Aldi in its wake.

And in its clothes and residential arm gross sales had been up 37.7 per cent on 2020 and, crucially, 3.2 per cent larger than in 2019.

M&S loved a record-breaking quarter for lingerie as ladies flooded again to shops for bra fittings as soon as lockdowns eased.

Chief govt Steve Rowe hailed a ‘sturdy’ Christmas for M&S, including: ‘I stay inspired that our transformation plan is now driving improved efficiency.’ 

Signs of recovery at M&S had seen shares nearly triple since their pandemic low in mid-2020. But the stock fell 8 per cent, or 20p, to 233p yesterday as it warned of a ‘tough stability’ to handle rising prices.

M&S mentioned that whereas it was working arduous to maintain costs down, it was inevitable that some rises can be handed on to prospects.

The 138-year-old retailer has greater than 1,000 retailers within the UK together with greater than 700 Simply Food retailers.

Across the group gross sales hit £3.3billion, an 18.5 per cent soar from final year and eight.6 per cent above pre-Covid ranges.

It led to an upgraded forecast and the retailer mentioned income for the year to April 2 would now be ‘at the very least £500million’. It is its third revenue improve within the final six months.

Food gross sales had been buoyed by festive specials as M&S bought greater than 1,000,000 bottles of its light-up snowglobe gin and greater than 1,000,000 flashing shortbread tins.

The sturdy efficiency in clothes, which has struggled with declining gross sales for years, noticed gross sales high £1billion. 

While in-store gross sales had been 10.8 per cent under 2019 ranges, on-line purchases had been 50.8 per cent larger. 

Shore Capital retail analyst Clive Black mentioned: ‘The backside line is M&S meals gross sales are very sturdy and folks now wish to purchase M&S garments.’
